1. Sleep Deprivation, 2. Dehydration, and 3. Insufficient physical fitness.

Recent reports coming in across our News Desk indicate a shocking set of facts of life for the population of the United States.
According to several sources of reliable information, the three leading causes of preventable premature death are:
1. Sleep Deprivation,
2. Dehydration, and
3. Insufficient physical fitness.
These are factors primarily resulting from personal life styles, working conditions and habitation environments. That means, for better and for worse, change is possible, but not necessarily easy. Some conditions are under direct control of the individual, others are societal in nature. (The ancient African proverb is true - it really does take a "village" after all. And it only takes a few "idiots" to mess a lot of things up.)
For example, if a person loses an hour of sleep each night - for any reason - it adds up to the equivalent of a lost night's sleep each week. (You can do your own math.)
If, for another example, you are trying to manage your weight, suppose you can contribute one pound per week toward your goal? That adds up to 50 pounds in a year even if you take two weeks off for vacation or holidays. (That should be possible without enduring outrageous diet plans or incurring excessive health club costs.)

"THE HUMAN SLEEP CYCLE" As can be seen from the "hypnogram" in Figure 1, sleep stages cycle throughout the night, shown especially by REM sleep, which appears about every 90 minutes in human sleep, with each episode lasting around 20 minutes, and in total constituting 20-25% of sleep. Two other characteristics of sleep seen in this hypnogram are: a rapid descent to stage 4 sleep soon after sleep onset, and a prevalence of stages 3 and 4 sleep in the first two sleep cycles. The first period of REM sleep is usually a little shorter than the average.
